The devastation of Japan’s New Year’s Day earthquake in pictures

Tsunamis and powerful aftershocks have left a trail of destruction throughout the country as the death toll continues to rise

Tsunamis caused by the tremors have left boats stranded in the city of Suzu, Ishikawa. Harbour buildings and homes close to the coast have been washed away and many other small boats have sunk.

The earthquake has caused many roads to crack and split. Access to remote regions, hardest-hit by the disaster, have been cut off making rescue efforts difficult.

Rescue workers and canine units urgently sift through rubble on Wednesday ahead of predicted freezing cold and heavy rain. The prime minister has called the effort ‘a race against time’.

Emergency services engage in search and rescue efforts overnight to find those trapped beneath collapsed buildings. One woman in Suzu, Ishikawa was rescued by firefighters on Wednesday.

Several strong jolts were felt throughout Ishikawa including one of 5.6 magnitude. The death toll rose on Wednesday to 62 but this number is expected to grow as rescue operations continue.

Wajima, Ishikawa located on the main island of Honshu, was severely damaged in the disaster. Many buildings have been ravaged by fire and houses flattened in several towns across central Japan.

Suzu, on the costline of Ishikawa, was hit by the earthquake. Japan issued subsequent major tsunami warnings and more than 50,000 people have been evacuated inland.

In Suzu City almost 90 per cent of the houses are completely or partially destroyed. Older, wooden homes have been hardest hit by the tremors.

The majority of the victims have been people who were crushed when their homes collapsed. On Tuesday officials warned many to stay away from their homes in case of aftershocks.
